Traumatisés par la Terreur, les théoriciens de la Révolution dénoncèrent le triomphe catastrophique du volontarisme abstrait des Lumières qui exigeait la réalisation immédiate des grands principes intemporels. La volonté politique leur apparut comme la figure même du mal. Aussi cherchèrent-ils, paradoxalement, à inscrire le projet d’autonomie dans le mouvement immanent du social, et pour ce faire à subordonner la volonté politique aux savoirs du social, ce qui ne va pas de soi. Nous ne sommes pas sortis, aujourd’hui encore, de cette tension entre les exigences de la volonté et celles du savoir, qui est née de la Révolution française.

Political Rupture and Production of Time: Knowledge and Will around the French Revolution
Frédéric Brahami here examines how early 19th century thinkers saw the French Revolution as a rupture, both social and psychic, in fabric of spacetime. Traumatized by the Terror, early theoreticians of the revolution denounced the catastrophe of enlightenment-based self-determination (volontarisme), which called for the immediate institution of Great and Intemporal Principles. In this light, political will was seen as an avatar of Evil. They also paradoxically sought to carry out their project of autonomy within the immanent movements of the social body, thereby subordinating political will to social knowledge. Even today we have not resolved the tension, born of the French Revolution, between the demands of will and those of knowledge.
